The Argentines will elect a president and a vice president on October 27, 2019. This presidential race will begin on July 12, and the official candidates will emerge from the primary elections of August 11, 2019.
Facebook will remind important dates to Argentines, thanks to an agreement signed between the company and the Argentine Electoral Commission. Through this agreement, Facebook will provide a series of tools, such as a reminder on the day of the vote and a button for those over 16 years to obtain detailed information about the elections, as well as the necessary documents to vote and instructions to contact to the electoral commission in case of doubts.
The agreement entered into force on April 10 and will run until the day after the end of the electoral period.
Training citizens and journalists for Argentina elections
The CNE and Facebook will also work in the organization of workshops and forums to train Commission officials, journalists and citizens in general about the functioning of the platform as a space for civic participation and the best digital communication practices.
“We are pleased to be able to work together with the CNE to stimulate citizen participation in elections and facilitate direct communication between citizens and their representatives,” said Marcos Tourinho, Facebook manager for elections in Latin America, who he described as a priority the protection of integrity in the Argentine elections.
“People use Facebook to connect, interact and share the issues of their interest. And the choice is one of them. We have learned a lot in recent years about the relevance of civil conversation on the platform and the benefits of collaborating with authorities, promoting citizen participation with our tools, and we have redoubled our efforts to protect Facebook from possible abuses. We hope that this agreement with the CNE is another contribution for the Argentine society to live an open and transparent electoral process, “he added.
