Evan Spiegel: Early days
Evan Spiegel was born in Los Angeles, California, in a well-off family. His parents are two successful lawyers, although his mother resigned from the office where he worked to take care of their children. Evan studied design at the Otis College of Art and Design and one year before entering Stanford; he studied at the Art Center College of Design. Milka Broukhim’s design classes had a substantial impact on him. Years later, he would say that he would never forget the typography experiments he did in the course, which would transform him as a student.
Evan Spiegel: Career
The idea of Snapchat came to Spiegel in a product design class, where he proposed an ephemeral messenger app which caused the mockery of his colleagues. For Spiegel, the idea was not absurd, seeing how people on Facebook stopped being spontaneous because they were becoming more aware of their own image. Evan embraced the idea, and a year later, he would work with his partners Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown.
With three subjects to finish the degree, Spiegel left Standford to devote himself entirely to Snapchat, which in a short time reached more than one million active users. That year, Snapchat began operating with a team of 28 people in Venice, California.
Like other social networks, in the beginning, Snapchat did not get an income, and the increase in users meant that the cost of the servers increased. A $ 485,000 investment from Lightspeed Venture Partners in April 2012 helped them pay the bills. Until 2014 Snapchat includes a feature to generate income.
The company diversifies and brings out new products, changing its name to Snap Inc. In 2017, Snap Inc. became an IPO and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
In July 2018, Evan Spiegel ended his career at Standford.
