Data centers in Brazil are expanding

In this month alone, Oracle, CenturyLink, and IBM have announced plans to expand their data centers in Brazil

In Brazil, the demand for data centers is on the rise. This trend is reflected in the investments that various cloud-based service provider companies are making to increase their capacity in the region.

In this month alone, Oracle, CenturyLink, and IBM have announced plans to expand their data centers in Brazil, especially in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

At the beginning of the month, Oracle has announced that it will build a third data center in Brazil, according to information from the vice president of Latin American firm Marcos Pupo. This announcement comes after four years of the Oracle technology company inaugurating its first data center in Brazil.

The new facilities will aim to support the operations of the other data centers and serve as the backup to the data.

The US software firm currently manages two data center facilities, both in the state of Sao Paulo. These are the only Oracle data centers in Latin America.

The data centers that are currently operating will be maintained and updated to have the ability to provide automatic cloud computing services, creating what Oracle calls the second generation of cloud centers in the region.

Plans for the region of Brazil should be ready by the end of August, with similar releases in India, Switzerland, and Australia, according to information from Oracle. No investment vehicle was disclosed for these services. Oracle’s goal is to have 19 cloud center regions operational by the end of this year.

Updates to data centers is a crucial issue to provide cloud services, according to Oracle. Executives also claim that these will be the only autonomous databases, enhanced with machine learning and Artificial Intelligence capabilities. Oracle mentioned that these data centers would be able to encrypt the information, make backups, make adjustments, and updates themselves automatically whenever a security threat is detected.

Among Oracle’s clients in Brazil, are the insurance company Porto Seguro, the logistics company VLI and the satellite operator of AT&T, Sky.

CenturyLink will also increase its capabilities in Brazil.

The growing demand for services has led CenturyLink to develop the necessary infrastructure to continue expanding the capacity of its data centers in Brazil.

This company is located in the São Cristóvão area. The company’s data center in Rio de Janeiro offers customers a processing environment designed to provide high levels of availability, improve quality, and ensure faster access speeds from the rest of the world.

CenturyLink operates three data centers in Brazil, in addition to 360 worldwide. He recently expanded his capacity in Rio de Janeiro. CenturyLink cloud and data center director Rodrigo Olivera mentioned that Rio de Janeiro is one of the main economic zones in Brazil. For that reason, they have invested in expanding their data center in the region.

Recently, CenturyLink became an AMT provider, which selected them for the structure they have to drive the expansion of their businesses and serve more customers.

The company also launched a data center in Quito, Ecuador. Also, he plans to expand his data center in Santiago, Chile. These facilities will be built through a modular system known as eCentre and will be remodeled so that the constructions meet all local structural requirements.

The company mentioned that datacentres are sponsored by both CenturyLink and a customer environment, managed by a team of technicians.

One of the most critical features of AMT is its customer service. For this reason, his team is prepared to understand the technological environment that customers require and suggest solutions to generate peace of mind for clients so that they can focus on their business, according to Marcio Lacs, founder of AMT.

To consolidate the partnership with Sankhya, they saw CenturyLink as an ally for being one of the few providers that can offer services nationwide, in addition to having the certifications that support the quality of their data center services.

IBM also expands its services

Finally, later this month, IBM announced that it would build a second data center in Brazil. This facility would be a third of the company in Latin America. The company will provide public cloud computing services, the company announced Tuesday during an event in Sao Paulo.

With this expansion, Brazil will soon become the third region of IBM that is interconnected with a data center framework called IBM Cloud (Multizone Region). This facility is the first of its kind in Latin America.

With this, IBM hopes to be able to bring more robust cloud services, with the infrastructure to provide Artificial Intelligence services. The North American company is one of the leaders in this area with its Watson platform. The facilities would be ready to operate from the second half of 2020.

For Marcos Pontes, Minister of Science and Technology of Brazil, the IBM initiative expands investments in data centers and represents an important step to consolidate the infrastructure that the country needs to advance the digital economy.

The minister added that IBM’s decision confirms that the transformations that Brazil is carrying out make the country an attractive site for investments, materializing bets for the present and the future of the country.

With this data center, IBM already has 60 data centers around the world. The company announced that it would spend $ 10 million on development and research for another center that will focus on Artificial Intelligence in Sao Paulo, in association with the state research promotion agency Fapesp.

Challenges to continue the development of data centers in the region.

A large part of the digital economy is driven globally by cloud-based data services. These services are growing at an accelerated rate of 30 to 40% per year for some data providers, according to the Inter-American Development Bank.

Data processing centers need to be located near the data domain centers to continue this pace of growth. In this way, they reduce the delay times in the handling and transfer of the data.

These data centers require large amounts of energy, which must be clean, reliable, and affordable. Also, other resources, such as water supply are needed. The energy demand of a data center can vary from a few Megawatts to several hundred MW.

Currently, Latin America has the infrastructure to provide these services with the energy they need. However, governments should propose policies to improve power supplies to continue this expansion.
