Hu Weiwei

Hu Weiwei is a Chinese journalist and businesswoman. She is the co-founder of the Mobike bike-sharing company.

Hu Weiwei: Early days

Hu Weiwei was born in Dongyang in 1982. She studied at the Department of Journalism of Zhejiang City University (2000–2004) and graduated from a communication degree.

Hu worked for the Daily Economic News (每 经 网), a Chinese business newspaper that mainly covers technology news and cars. She subsequently worked at Beijing News and for Business Value, specializing in technology news. In 2014, Hu founded the GeekCar media platform.

Hu Weiwei created a team at the end of 2015 to start a bicycle-sharing company. This team formed him thanks to his contacts in the automobile and technology sector. In January 2016, she launched Mobike along with Wang Xiaofeng, the general manager of the Shanghai Uber office, also known by his English name Davis Wang, who would be the company’s first CEO.

Unable to buy bicycles from suppliers at preferred locations, the company began building its own bikes that started to be used in April 2016.

After the sale of Mobike, its founding partner left the company by disagreeing with the purchase. Hu Weiwei assumed the position of CEO of the company, but left him in December 2018 for personal reasons, leaving the place to Liu Yu.

At the beginning of 2017, Hu Weiwei was one of seven leaders, academics, and entrepreneurs to appear before Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and other political leaders to provide ideas for the Annual Government Report.

Forbes business magazine included Hu and his partner Xia Yiping in their 40 Under 40 list. In April 2018, it was announced that Mobike was acquired by the Chinese corporate Meituan-Dianping for $ 2.7 billion, while it is estimated that Hu received approximately $ 220 million for sale.
